AD is a skill and a profession, and it can be exhausting to do for an entire night. The reality of this means that, even though I’m a performer, I don’t actually go out much.įor those of you who in your kindest of hearts want to jump up and say “I’ll come along and I’ll describe it to you!” thank you but it’s not that easy. I say this not to make ya’ll feel guilty or sad for all us poor li’l blindies, I’m saying it so you know where we are coming from.įor myself, I will often avoid events that do not include AD because I know they will be hard work for me and that I will not feel safe or included. As a blind person I am very unlikely to ever have that privilege. Think about it: being able to look at something (and process it in a neurotypicial way) usually gives a person the ability to get a large amount of information quickly and (often) not consciously. Not including AD is, at best, unintentionally exclusionary, and at worst it is cultural gate keeping. Quite simply, AD is one of the primary ways blind and VI people can interact with visual content. What is even better is having a choice about how description is delivered.Īudio description has been around for decades but is still woefully under-used and not commonly understood to be a creative tool. At this point, what we want is for blind and VI people to be given the chance to engage with audio description in any format. Both can work just fine, and of course, every blind person will have their own preference. It is important to note that we here at Quiplash are not saying that one of these styles is better than the other. For example, some might have the AD in first person with the characters on stage speaking directly about themselves whereas others might have the describer speaking in third person, but as a character in the show with a specific perspective. The tone of voice and point of view varies widely with this style as it’s made bespoke for that show or art piece. Most of the time, this type of AD is treated as a creative tool as well as an access tool, and is built into an art piece or performance at the beginning of the creation process. If you are a sighted person and/or new to AD, you may have been to shows that use integrated AD and not even noticed! This usually means that anyone who can hear the AD will be able to. It is often considered as important as, or part of, the art itself. Integrated AD is when creators put AD into a piece. ![]() Systems of privilege permeate access tools, too. * ‘Neutral’ in this case tends to mean it’s made and delivered by white, middle class, cisgender people. ![]() Netflix’s AD is pretty good if you are curious about what it sounds like. On TV, if a programme is described, there is usually a function that needs to be switched on. This means that only people who request this type of access will get it and other people may not even be aware it is happening. In live performance, at the cinema or in a museum, AD is usually delivered to blind and VI people through headsets – although occasionally a describer will whisper directly to a blind or VI person. the audio description is considered secondary to the art). It is created independently of the original artist/s to fit in gaps in the original sound track (i.e. Most often, AD is quite functional, delivered “neutrally*” in third person. It is an access tool made specifically for blind and visually impaired people. It is an auditory description of something visual used in many different spaces including sports, live performance, visual art, museums, television and film. What is audio description?ĪD is exactly what it says on the tin. It is not OK for sighted people to call a person or a group of people ‘blindy’ without their consent.) Introduction The recent explosive growth of research in the field of nanotechnology has provided a wide range of novel materials and strategies for biomedicine, including important advances in bioimaging, drug delivery, photothermal/photodynamic therapy, and gene transfection. We anticipate that the innovative approach proposed in this work will help to establish new stimuli-responsive delivery systems and biomaterials. ![]() ![]() Furthermore, we show light-controlled cell adhesion on a peptide-modified surface and 3D spatiotemporal control over cellular uptake of nanoparticles using two-photon excitation. Using this system, we can remotely regulate drug administration into cancer cells by functionalizing camptothecin-loaded polymeric nanoparticles with our synthetic peptide ligands. When the peptide is conjugated to ligands of interest, we demonstrate the photo-activated cellular uptake of a wide range of cargoes, including small fluorophores, proteins, inorganic ( e.g., quantum dots and gold nanostars) and organic nanomaterials ( e.g., polymeric particles), and liposomes. To achieve this, we designed a novel photo-caged peptide which undergoes a structural transition from an antifouling ligand to a cell-penetrating peptide upon photo-irradiation. ![]() Here we report new photo-activatable cell–material interfacing systems that trigger cellular uptake of various cargoes and cell adhesion towards surfaces. Spatio-temporally tailoring cell–material interactions is essential for developing smart delivery systems and intelligent biointerfaces. ![]() I learned very quickly that I really liked tailoring the experience to the specific content I was watching. On the app’s main screen you can change between video, music, and game modes, adjust the intensity between subtle, moderate, high, and extreme, and adjust the brightness with a slider. Start playing some content through the sync box and start tinkering with the settings in the Hue Sync app to make the system work like you want it to. The app prompts you to place lights in a 3D model of your room.Īt this point, you’re basically good to go. ![]() You can also create multiple “entertainment area” setups in case there are times when you only want the TV to be backlit. ![]() This is so the sync box knows what color to turn which light and when so everything flows smoothly. If you have multiple Hue lights around the room, you will place each of them in a 3D diagram of a room. This is where you’ll set up and control your impending light show. You just take the HDMI cables coming from your streaming devices, video game consoles, Blu-ray players, etc., and instead of running them into the TV, you run them into the sync box and then connect the sync box’s HDMI out to the TV and plug in the power.įrom there, you have to install a separate Hue Sync app on your phone. (Though I’d recommend getting the right size strip for your TV.) From there, you just plug it into a wall outlet and add it to your home system via the bridge and the Hue app. Luckily, because the strips bend, I was able to add some curves to the straightaways, and everything fit and aligned as intended. This was made slightly more complicated for me because I have a 55-inch TV, and Hue accidentally sent me the 65-inch strip. Then you just slot the flexible gradient strip into the groove in the guides. The system includes a few plastic guides with double-sided tape that you affix to the back of your TV. That done, my first task was to add the gradient strip to my TV. Setting up the system was simple, but I had a head start because I already had Hue lights scattered around my apartment (accounting for all of the lights in my living room), which meant my Hue Bridge was already set up with my Wi-Fi and account. These can all be looped into the sync box’s stream so the colors on your screen can extend not just behind your TV but also all around your room, which turned out to be way cooler than I thought it would be. The nice-to-haves are any other color-changing Hue lights around your living room. The flexible gradient lightstrip comes in three sizes and slots into channels that you affix to the back of your TV. That’s how the sync box will tell the gradient strip which colors to display and when. ![]() The mandatory piece is the $60 Philips Hue Bridge, which connects directly to your Wi-Fi router and acts as the central hub for all things Hue. There’s one more mandatory component (yup, this is getting expensive) as well as some other nice-to-haves. The idea is that the colors sort of bleed off of the screen and onto the wall behind it, making the screen feel larger. The 65-inch strip I ended up with contained roughly 80 individual LEDs, but they don’t all have to display the same color at the same time, which is how they are able to create a representation of the many colors being displayed on the edge of your TV screen. This is a flexible strip of LED lights that affixes to the back of your TV. The other major piece is the Play gradient lightstrip, which varies in price depending on the size needed for your TV ( $250 for the 55 inch, $270 for the 65 inch, and $300 for the 75 inch). The sync box itself sits between your HDMI devices and your TV and does all the lighting processing. It was somewhat limited when it first launched, but it now supports Dolby Vision, Atmos, and HDR10 Plus, so your programs should look and sound just as good as they normally do. It’s a clever design that greatly reduces lag so your lights stay tightly synced, though there is one major flaw to this method, which we’ll get into in a moment. This is how the system knows what’s on your TV screen so it can color match your lights all of the imagery is routed through it. On the back are four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. It is, as the name suggests, a roughly 7 x 4 x 1-inch box. The $250 Play HDMI Sync Box is the brains of the operation. Let’s break this system down into its component parts.
